The Search for Better Shotgun Triggers: Remington Versa Max, Browning, Etc.

Factory autoloading triggers, out of the box, are often in the class of “wonderfully adequate” to unusable. You've probably read this for many years in most of my reviews. All too often, a factory trigger break weight in more than the entire gun. For years, before their respective retirements, I used Allen Timney and then Bob from Precision Sports.

The Remington Versa Max, a very impressive shotgun, had a heavy trigger, breaking at 7 lbs. 7 ounces. Bob at Precision, who was still doing trigger work at the time, had already decided to stop working on Versa Max triggers. The customer service at Remington was very responsive, sending me a new trigger guard immediately. However, the new trigger group was even heavier, breaking at 8 lbs. 3 oz. My Versa Max itself weighs 8 lbs. 1.5 oz.

Enter Bill Springfield of http://www.triggerwork.net/ . Bill Springfield hails from Colorado Springs, Colorado, and does aftermarket trigger work for a living. Bill's price is more than fair at $45, and his turnaround runs about a week or so. The current $45 includes return shipping, add 3-1/2 percent if using a credit card.

The design of the Versa Max trigger is not conducive to a light trigger pull: it is no competition trigger, but it isn't supposed to be for it is a heavy and heavy duty 3.5 inch waterfowl gun, after all. Bill was able to get my example trigger down to a 4-3/4 to 5 lb. break, smoothing it out and making it crisper as well. All triggers are slightly different, but Bill should have no problem improving a Versa Max trigger to 5-1/2 pounds or perhaps a bit better, a vast improvement over factory. Bill Springfield can get most Browning autoloading triggers down to 3-1/2 lbs or so.

I think Bill is going to be doing a lot of shotgun triggers, to make an understatement. He's going to be improving the performance of a lot of autoloaders that sorely need it.
